Where the rates come from

currencyapi end-of-day rates cover 170+ currencies, aggregated from several market data sources.
ECB reference rates are published by the European Central Bank around 16:00 CET on each business day for 30 currencies against the euro. Cross rates such as USD/JPY are calculated through the euro.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the exchange rate on a specific date?

Enter the amount, choose the two currencies and the date, and click Convert. You get the end-of-day rate of that date and, for the 30 currencies the European Central Bank publishes, the ECB reference rate as well.

Which rate should I use for accounting or taxes?

Many tax authorities and auditors accept the central bank reference rate of the transaction date (in the EU usually the ECB rate). Check your local rules; some require the rate of the national central bank or a monthly average.

How far back do the rates go?

To January 1999 for the major currencies. Some currencies have shorter histories because they were introduced later.

What happens on weekends and holidays?

Markets are closed, so the rate of the last trading day applies. The ECB does not publish reference rates on weekends and TARGET holidays.
